Cohort windows that fit reporting products
Weekly cohorts borrowed from consumer apps often mislead B2B reporting products. Match the window to how accounts actually adopt the tool.
Consumer products can justify seven-day retention windows. Many analytics dashboards and internal reporting apps cannot. An operations analyst may log in heavily during month-end close and barely touch the product mid-cycle. Measuring those accounts on a rigid weekly cadence brands healthy seasonal users as churned.
Before you lock a cohort window, interview three people who rely on the product for their job. Ask when they expect to return after first value. Build engagement retention around that rhythm — biweekly, monthly, or fiscal-period aligned — and note the choice beside the chart. Stakeholders forgive unusual windows when the rationale is written next to the number.
If your product serves mixed personas, split cohort views rather than averaging them into a single misleading curve.
